The INN is coming soon!

Winter Update

Lisa Clark| February 6, 2026

Hello Friends and Supporters of The INN,

It has been a very cold start to 2026 here in Southeast Manitoba. This weather only reinforces our urgency and resolve to work toward providing housing for our neighbours who are experiencing homelessness.

We continue to meet with, and receive support from, many experts in the field of homelessness across our province. Through these conversations, we are learning and growing as we work to create the best Housing Model possible. We are also meeting with other community stakeholders to strategize how we can work together—without overlap—to meet the needs of those who are currently unhoused or at risk of becoming unhoused.

In addition, we recently delivered letters to over 100 local businesses, with a focus on the downtown area. These letters were intended to foster open communication and to provide answers to the most common questions we’ve received about The INN. Many of these questions and answers were also included in our media release on Steinbach Online in December. Please click here to read the article if you missed it.

As mentioned in our previous update, we will be providing access to nursing care. This important support required upgrades to our building, and we spent countless hours working to ensure the facility meets an even higher standard of care. Full architectural and engineering drawings have been completed and are ready for construction once we receive our permit. This is an exciting step forward.

Our final remaining hurdle is securing a permit with the City. On the advice of a by-law specialist and a lawyer, in late 2025, we submitted our civil engineering drawings under Steinbach’s Assisted Living By-Law.  Unfortunately, City Council did not approve the drawings under the Assisted Living By-law.  Without those approvals, we are unable to apply for a building permit.   We remain committed to continuing our work with the City to find a solution. While the permit process has been challenging, our planning, partnerships, and readiness continue to move forward.

Here is how you can continue to help: please share our updates with friends, family, and neighbours, and engage in meaningful and respectful conversations within your circles. It truly takes an entire community to make a project like this successful.

Thank you once again for your ongoing support—both financially and through your emails, encouragement, and kind words.

Sincerely,

The Board of The INN
